Eliminate your phone bill an OBi device

this one is probably the biggest way to save money, this will save you our ENTIRE phone bill.
this method will only work in the USA

savings: varies by your phone bill
initial investment: roughly $60
Monthly Costs: $0.00

first a warning: if you choose to set up an obi with only google voice services you will not be able to make 911 calls
to make 911 calls you will need to set up anveo as a service provider (more in another post)
you will need few things
  1. reliable internet services that work without a phone lime (not DSL)
  2. land line phone
  3. an obihai VoIP adapter
  4. a google voice account, with a google voice number

OBIhai is a company that makes VoIP adapters that can connect to many different VoIP providers, unlike magic jack or vonage you need to use their adapter and it will only work with their services. I'm going to call the device an obi.

to start there are 2 base models of the obi device the obi100 and the obi200
the basic specs you need to know are

the obi100
  • supports 2 VoIP providers
  • requires an ethernet connection, no option for wireless
  • retails for $60.00 on amazon. its currently on sale for $49.99
the obi200
  • supports 4 providers
  • has a USB port for OBI addons
  • can connect to wireless networks with the obi wireless adapter
  • retails for $89.99 on amazon, its currently on sale for $47.31

now you could make this work with the obi100 however the extra cost of the obi200 is in essence not much and well worth it,

basically you connect google voice to the obi as a VoIP provider, and you will be able to get receive calls using your google voice number, or via Gmail/hangouts (using your google id)

the process will be broken down in steps
purchase an obi device
register for google voice, and obtain a google voice number
set up the obi device
link google voice to your obi

Step 1: verify with your ISP if your internet requires a phone line.
If you have DSL this tutorial may not be for you. In the future I will post an alternative.
AT&T uverse may also require a phone line
Cable internet however does not require a phone line.

Step 2: Purchase an obi device
you can buy an obi at some brick and moter stores, i know FRYs Electronics sells them.
i recommend the obi200 from amazon

step 3: set up google voice
first make sure you have a google account, if not register for one.
next register for google voice using your google account and select a google number
you will need to provide an actual phone number during the process. (this can be removed later)

Step 4: link your Google voice account to your OBi
Follow the directions that came with your OBi to link Google voice as SP1.

Step 5: test Google voice by calling someone you know.
Just call somebody, and make sure your call clarity is good.

Step 6: cancel your phone service.
Call your phone company and cancel your phone service.
If your phone company says they will beat your new rate tease them by saying, "you will pay me to stay! My new bill is zero dollars and zero cents, taxes and fees included."
